Study on the Development of Passive House Trends in Europe 2010 – 2021

In the year 2021 – the first year when the EU Buildings Directive will take effect for all buildings throughout Europe – the passive house will be the dominating construction standard for new buildings. Due to its high energy savings of 50 – 80%, the extremely low additional costs of 0 – 4% and the considerably better comfort compared to the low-energy standard prevailing in Europe until around 2015 in Europe, the passive house will clearly assert itself in the real estate market. Europa Fläche 2021

This is reason enough to analyse the development of the complete sector of new buildings in the 31 countries of Europe up to the year 2021 in a comprehensive study. This study is based on different perspectives in order to better analyse past and future trends.

  • What is the effect of the obligatory EU building standard "nearly zero energy building" on the energetic building standards in the individual countries in Europe?
  • Which countries will fulfil the requirements in exemplary fashion and which countries will lag behind meeting the directive?
  • How will the different building categories develop:
    • Single-family and two-family houses
    • Terraced houses and multi-family houses
    • Non-residential sectorReihenhäuser und Mehrfamilienhäuser
  • What is the current number of large-scale projects with a floor space of 10,000 to 400,000 square metres in passive-house standard in Europe?
  • Where do passive-house beacon regions exist already in Europe which have set an example and implement the passive-house standard in exemplary fashion in their sphere of influence?
  • What are the energetic building standards that will exist in 2021, apart from the passive house, and what significance will they have?
  • Analysis of 4,400 documented passive houses in Europe

As distinguished adept of the European passive house scene and networker with all important actors LANG consulting can analyze all these questions very precise. The result is an extensive analyze about the change of the European building standard until 2021.

Especially for the European building material industry and the real estate sector this market analyzes and future trends offer an important guideline. Furthermore the study is a useful instrument for policy makers on national and European level to create the right general regulations for an energy efficient future.
